Much of the media chatter surrounding ongoings at the Emirates of late has of course centered on German international Ozil.
This comes with Mikel Arteta having doubled down on his efforts to freeze the former Real Madrid man out of his first-team setup.
Upon Spanish tactician Arteta taking the reins in north London late last year, Ozil’s initial experiences actually proved quite positive. The 32-year-old was afforded a consistent string of starts by his new boss, suggesting that he was set to prove central to the plans of Arteta moving forward.
Bizarrely, however, since football’s return on the back of the initial Covid-19 outbreak during the summer, Ozil has not received a single minute of playing time.
When signed, it would have represented a record deal for French football and with the pandemic, the hope was that with fans unable to attend matches the demand for televised games would be massive.
However, this has not been the case and Telefoot, the channel which was created to broadcast the matches, has only got 600,000 subscribers. Reportedly the company were expecting a figure closer to 3.5 million.
The company has tried to negotiate a lesser figure to be paid to compensate for the lack of subscriptions but this has not been possible and therefore the company has needed to pull out completely.
Supposedly Canal Plus, which has shown some games this season, is waiting to position itself with an offer. A statement from the LFP said they have “jointly defined the terms of an agreement which will lead to the recovery of the broadcasting rights for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 matches by the LFP in the near future.”
